Franconia Governmental Center

Retained by Fairfax County to provide design and construction administration services for a new co-located single facility in an area of Alexandria known as Franconia District Governmental Center, G+P is designing the Center to include various independent programs.

Included among the programs are a Regional Library, a Police Department, an office suite for the Board of Supervisors, an Active Adult Center, a childcare Center, the Franconia Museum, one secure parking structure for the Police Department, one public parking structure to serve the remainder of the complex, and a fueling station to serve county vehicles.

The design of the new two-story consolidated facility and its two parking garages strives to minimize the visual impact of the parking structures along Beulah Street and Silver Lake Blvd (Silver Lake). With this primary goal in mind, the overall site layout places the Police Department as close as possible to the corner intersection of Beulah Street and Silver Lake — immediately adjacent to the Library and other active program areas of the facility — and locates the parking garages as close as possible to Interparcel Road.

By locating the Police Department on the corner intersection with its secure parking structure adjacent along Beulah Street, the design helps create a clear separation of the Police from all other facility users, providing the Police the secure layout they require. Equally important, the design takes advantage of the corner exposure and visibility at the intersection by greeting the community with an attractive building façade as a symbolic gateway to the consolidated facility along Silver Lake.
