Addition To Historic Building

The request was extraordinary: a multi-story addition and renovation to compliment the downtown historic landmark theatre, offer up-to-date amenities, meet current code, and offer the latest technology. The renovation and addition solves many functional deficiencies and increases connectivity to the adjacent properties to become a catalyst to the revitalization of historic downtown Hagerstown.

The meticulously restored neoclassical Maryland Theatre is the crown jewel of the City of Hagerstown's Arts + Entertainment District. The new expansion provides the theatre with all of the front-of-house amenities it was longing for since the tragic fire that ravaged the building in 1974. A bridge and thoughtfully designed walkway connect the original 1915 theatre and its new expansion to the adjacent Barbara Ingram School for the Arts. This connection allows students of the Washington County Public School to experience the rehearsal studio and dressing rooms on the third floor of the building.

The charming grandeur of the new façade and open grand lobby draw visitors in. With the new orchestra and mezzanine lobbies, theatre patrons have access to an abundance of amenities such as updated concession stands, improved box office, VIP lounge, and additional restrooms.

Historic Meets New

Keeping connections to the local arts community played a major role in this project.

At the lower level, artists have a gallery to showcase their work and the multi-functional top floor expansion offers the community event space to host private weddings, receptions, business functions, and the like – making the new expansion truly an extension of the Hagerstown community.

Grimm + Parker successfully captured our greatest operational needs with stunning results.
