A two-alarm fire on January 4, 2017 caused extensive damage to Tucker Road Ice Rink in Oxon Hill, Maryland, forcing its closure. That was a blow to hockey players, figure skaters and other skating enthusiasts in the area who had been using the facility extensively since the early 1970s. To pursue their sports, they had to travel long distances to other rinks.
