St. Coletta of Greater Washington
- 13,500 sf (Rockville), 20,000 sf (Alexandria)
A universal hands-on philosophy.
St. Coletta is a non-sectarian school that serves children and adults with intellectual disabilities, autism and secondary disabilities. St. Coletta’s educational philosophy is one that we at G+P also embrace:
“…the real focus of education needs to be on the individual learners and the skills they need to be successful in life. We believe that individuals learn best by doing. To that end, we plan hands-on, theme-based activities that allow for experimentation and trial and error.”
G+P worked with administrators, teachers, aides and students (“clients”) to renovate two of the school’s campuses to provide spaces where interactive learning and hands-on activities can occur in both individual and small group settings.
The Peyton Street campus in Alexandria was renovated to support functional academics, skills of daily living, community-based instruction, adaptive physical education, arts education, computer skills and vocational training. The hands-on learning environments are designed to meet the distinctive needs of developmentally challenged clients.
The Rockville campus design reimagined an industrial high bay space into a bright, open and inspiring training environment. The space houses environments where clients can make, package and ship fused glass art products.
