Celebrating all that is Calvert County.
The new Prince Frederick Library celebrates the unique characteristics of Calvert County and the poetry of its place. The library serves as an anchor drawing visitors to the newly-developed Town Center, with its retail, shopping, and residential amenities.
The lighthouse-like stair—connecting the library’s two floors and an active cafe area—reflects the prevalence of boating in the County’s history, and the exterior massing mimics local tobacco barns and boat building sheds. The masonry is also reminiscent of the rock strata of the region’s Calvert Cliffs. The library’s interior features a fireplace in the reading area with cast stone and embedded million-year-old fossils of whales, shark teeth, and shells.
The new library draws visitors in with its warm, dramatic interior spaces and cozy nooks such as the study rooms, tutor rooms, quiet room and public access computers.
The library’s major components are located on the first floor, with popular and new materials prominently displayed near the entry with a retail flair and feel. The cafe and large reading rooms provide ample space to read in the natural daylight. The teen area features furniture to attract young adults and lots of computers to keep them engaged. The children’s area is safety located on the second floor, with quick and easy access provided by a large, inviting elevator with lots of room for strollers and book trucks.
